UPDATE: COVID-19 Stimulus Payments & Social Security

4/16/20 UPDATE:  Along side other advocates from across the nation, BLC has been pushing Social Security and the IRS to make it easier for people to access Stimulus Payments.  We are happy to report that the work is paying off.  SSI only recipients communicate regularly with Social Security to ensure that all of their contact and financial information is on record and up to date.  This is why it just didn’t make sense for SSI recipients to have to take extra steps to access their stimulus funds.  The IRS has now issued information confirming that adult SSI recipients do not need to do anything extra in order to receive their stimulus checks.

There are still some concerning hurdles for youth under 17 years old and families with dependents under 17 years old.  This population will still need to use the IRS portal to provide information to the IRS in order to receive stimulus payments.  Advocates continue to seek favorable changes to make this process as simple as possible.

We have updated our memo to reflect these changes.  Click here or read below.
