BLC is Hiring

Position Announcement
SCLC Mobile Attorney

We are looking for an attorney with 1-5 years of experience to serve the community as a Mobile Attorney.

SCLC is a compassionate legal services organization, committed to delivering: high-quality trauma informed advocacy centered on client needs; honor for the humanity of every client; and a continually inclusive and collaborative environment for all.  We make direct legal representation in Social Security matters accessible at the convenience of low-income community members in King County.  We offer legal advocacy that accommodates disabilities and other barriers that low-income people may face. SCLC builds workable advocacy plans for clients that face poverty, language barriers, homelessness, limited transportation, and mental illness.

We are hiring a mobile attorney so that we may better serve the needs of community members in the South end of King County.  The mobile attorney will make SCLC’s client-centered services available to people at several locations in South King County in partnership with community partners.

Responsibilities

The SCLC Mobile Attorney will travel regularly throughout South King County to build and maintain strong relationships with community partners in South King County so that we may deliver effective services to clients at places in South King County where they are already receiving human services from other organizations.  This includes coordinating community connections, conducting trainings, conducting ongoing outreach, and continually building a network of support for SCLC clients in South end communities.

The SCLC Mobile Attorney will be responsible for independently maintaining an active caseload and mentoring law school interns.  This includes scheduling meetings with clients, performing intakes, discovery, filing agency related paperwork, developing the evidentiary record, formal and informal written advocacy, oral advocacy, and regular diligent 1:1 client communication in person and on the telephone.

Travel, work on weekends, and occasional work in the evenings will be necessary.  The SCLC Mobile Attorney will be a person who is enthusiastic about traveling daily from site-to-site for the purpose of meeting clients where they are.  It will be necessary to have clear capacity to make quick transitions from travel to casework.

Qualifications

  • 1-5 years of experience practicing law
  • Demonstrated capacity to effectively develop case theories
  • Ability to juggle multiple ongoing projects effectively
  • Exercise good judgement under stressful situations
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a large caseload
  • Washington State Driver’s License
  • Experience with homeless and other underserved communities and people
  • Bilingual applicants are highly encouraged to apply
  • Member of the Washington State Bar
  • Experience training or teaching groups of 3+ adults

The applicant must have a commitment to inclusion and equity and carry personal values of respect for differences of race ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstance.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary is $45,000-$50,000 DOE.  Benefits include paid vacation and sick time, a retirement plan, and medical benefits.

Application Procedure

To apply, email a letter of interest, a resume, and a short writing sample (3-5 pages) to Alex Doolittle at alex@seattlecommlaw.org with the subject line “Mobile Attorney Application”.  Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

SCLC is an equal opportunity employer.  We value a diverse workforce and an inclusive culture.
