Seattle Community Law Center (SCLC), and the King County Bar Association’s Volunteer Legal Services (VLS) are launching a new program that will pair mentee* attorneys with an experienced SCLC mentor attorney to provide clients with representation for Social Security overpayment cases.
*Attorneys that are newly licensed to practice law in Washington State or are new to the area of Social Security administrative law are considered mentee attorneys for the purposes of this program.
General Duties:
• Provide direct representation through completion of client’s case
• Meet with client and keep client apprised of case updates
• Develop case strategy with mentor attorney
• Draft letters/forms to be timely sent to SSA or other administrative bodies
• Appear on behalf of client at any meetings or administrative hearings with SSA
Time Commitment: Volunteers are asked to accept at least one case per year. The time required to complete a case will vary depending on type and complexity.
Qualifications:
• Must be licensed to practice law in Washington State

Training and Support: All volunteers must attend the Social Security Overpayments Overview CLE or watch a previously recorded version. The KCBA provides office space for volunteers and interpreters for clients with limited English proficiency. Social services resources are also available.
