Last year, the Benefits Law Center had the opportunity to engage with over 1,200 people in King County as we joined them on their journey to obtain or maintain economic security through Social Security benefits. Each of our client’s Social Security issues is unique, and the journey we join them on can take anywhere from a few months to a few years. Along the way, we get the opportunity to learn more about their story and what brought our paths to cross. As a client-centered organization, building relationships with our clients is often the most rewarding part of the work we do.
As a civil legal aid organization, we have worked since our founding to amplify the voices of our clients, not only in the courtroom, but also in the communities we live in together. We learn from our clients every day, and we want the whole community to have the chance to learn from their incredible stories. That is why we created Client Day.
Client Day is a day when BLC hosts a group of clients who are interested in sharing their stories with the world. A few Champion BLC supporters who care deeply about our mission are invited to attend, and get a chance to hear firsthand from clients about how BLC supported them on their journey to economic stability. It is a rewarding day for everyone involved.
For the third year in a row, BLC was honored to work with Daniel Berman Photography. With a calming presence, and a natural ability to make those in front of his camera feel comfortable, Daniel captured head shots of our clients for them to use in their future ventures. We shared a meal and had many powerful moments of learning firsthand from our clients what it was like to work with BLC advocates to fight for their Social Security benefits.
The common connection of those in the room was BLC’s mission. Talking about personal experiences was a valuable experience for everyone involved. We look forward to sharing the photos and stories from Client Day in the coming months.
